Itsukushima Jinja (Shrine)

*This image is for illustrative purposes only.

Itsukushima Island (Miyajima) itself has been worshipped as a deity since old times.
The shrine was built in 593 by Kuramoto Saeki. Later, Taira no Kiyomori became Aki no Kami (the governor of Aki Province) and had strong faith in the shrine. As Kiyomori’s status rose, many imperial families and aristocrats visited it, which brought the culture of the capital to the island.

In 1996, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
